The Grasberg mine, in Papua, Indonesia, located at an altitude of 4100 m amsl, is regarded as the world’s largest gold mine and has been open-pit mined for decades. Starting in 2016, excavation has to be performed underground and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. is now investing extensively in new infrastructure to manage the transition.

Åkerströms’ radio systems will control systems for loading, hauling, and unloading of the automated and driverless trains transporting ore from the extraction point to the refining facilities. The solution targets highest productivity while having low environmental impact as well as focus on high personal safety.

Similar system to a new mining level in Kiruna, Sweden
Within a soon future we will deliver a similar system to a new mining level in Kiruna, Sweden. Åkerströms’ radio system operates the opening and closing of the ore chutes which provides the train wagons with ore. The radio system includes a special adapted joystick transmitter, a coding unit and a receiver, RXS96 including PROFINET.

High safety level
The system is very safe as it is most important that the correct ore chute is opened/closed at the right time. At each ore chute there is a receiver with an attached coding unit. To open/close the right ore chute the transmitter’s ID code must be coded against the ore chute’s receiver. This is done by holding the transmitter against the coding unit for a few seconds. This ensures that the correct ore chute is opened/closed at the right time. When the transmitter is turned off the code is dropped and it needs to be re-coded. Each transmitter can be coded against all receivers, but only one at a time.

Proven concept
By choosing a proven concept, Freeport-McMoRan is both minimizing production downtime in the transition between open-pit mining and underground mining, as well as assuring a reliable and safe operation with world class productivity.

Two of the most renowned mines in the world
We are extremely proud to have the privilege to deliver radio systems to two of the most renowned mines in the world.
